AKF Designs Energy-Saving $14.5 Million Tri-Fuel Refrigeration Plant in Time & Life Building
New York, NY -- Atkinson Koven Feinberg Engineers, LLP (AKF), a 160-person mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering firm headquartered in New York, developed a cost-effective tri-brid refrigeration plant for the 48-story, 2 million square foot Time & Life Building.
The unique refrigeration plant utilizes less space than the original (2) plants and provides the operator with a choice of using either gas, steam or electricity. Projected savings of at least $650,000 savings per year are anticipated for our client, The Rockefeller Group Development Corporation in New York City.
To take advantage of the industry-wide utilities deregulation, AKF designed the system so that the gas engines are the primary energy source for generation of chilled water with electric or steam driven machines operating during off-peak hours.
AKF's team included: RWDI, a Toronto, Canada-based consulting firm that analyzed engine exhaust sizing and the affects of engine exhaust gases on surrounding spaces; Swanke Hayden Connell, architects in New York; Thornton Tomasetti, structural engineers in New York; Shen Milsom & Wilke, acoustical/vibration consultants in New York; and Ambient Labs, New York consultants who filed the environmental documents with the city and state.
