Services: Sustainable Design
DOE-2 Energy Modeling
Being a full-service engineering firm, AKF also has full-building energy modeling capabilities utilizing the DOE II based VisualDOE program as well
as the Trane Trace modeling software. In conjunction AKF provides Computation Fluid Dynamics modeling using Fluent software. Some of our projects
include:
One Christina Crescent
LEED® Energy Modeling for Energy Code Compliance, Wilmington, DE
AKF was retained to provide energy modeling services to assist the design team in meeting energy code requirements as required by Prerequisite
EA pr 2 - Minimum Energy Performance in the LEED® Green Building Rating system. One Christina Crescent was built as a speculative office building
and larger than code allowed glass areas were felt to be important from a marketing standpoint.
AKF utilized the VisualDOE program to model the building using the DOE-2E energy modeling program. We modeled both the proposed design and an energy code compliant design based on the Energy Cost Budget methodology in the ASHRAE Standard 90.1. We then used the model to test various strategies for code compliance and determined that improved glass performance would bring the building into compliance with the energy code.
Aerzen USA
Energy Modeling for LEED® Registered, US Headquarters, Coatsville, PA
AKF provided energy modeling services for the Aerzen USA project to determine the energy performance of the design case versus the baseline code compliant building. The building was modeled with the VisualDOE program. Unique features of this project were the use of straw-bale construction, extensive day lighting and a geothermal heat pump system. The energy modeling was used to determine the contribution of the straw-bale construction for an Energy Harvest grant.
